Patients Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using such drugs must be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the way of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle management.
